Separate visual movement from layout
Moving an element with transform changes its visual presentation without asking neighboring content to take its new position. Changing a layout property such as width can affect surrounding geometry. Choose based on the intended result. A floating decorative shape needs visual movement; an expanding content panel may need its neighbors to move as well.
Start with a small hover example
For a project card, a translateY transform of a few pixels can communicate interactivity without changing the grid tracks. Transition the transform and perhaps a border color. Keep the displacement small enough that the target remains easy to follow. A dramatic lift on every card can become distracting and cause overlaps between adjacent rows.
Do not assume acceleration is automatic
Transforms and opacity are useful candidates for efficient animation, but the complete scene still matters. Large layers, expensive shadows, filters and continuously repainting descendants can add cost. A property choice is a starting point, not a performance certificate. Inspect the page with developer tools on the devices that matter to the project.
Avoid permanently promoting everything
A broad will-change rule on every card can reserve rendering resources for elements that never animate. Add such hints only when measurement supports them, and scope them to the relevant period where practical. The goal is to make a specific interaction smooth without increasing memory use across an entire long page of otherwise static content.
Coordinate reads and writes
In JavaScript-driven motion, avoid repeatedly reading layout immediately after changing styles for many elements. Collect the measurements you need, calculate the next values, then apply updates together. RequestAnimationFrame can organize frame work, but it is not a license to perform unlimited measurements and mutations during every scroll or pointer event.
Measure and provide an off state
Record an interaction before and after a change, inspect dropped frames and check whether text remains readable during movement. Test keyboard focus as well as pointer hover. Respect reduced-motion preferences and stop offscreen decorative loops when appropriate. A simpler animation that responds reliably is more useful than an elaborate effect that interrupts navigation.
