Recognize a one-dimensional group
A row of filter buttons, project tags or social links is often a good fit for Flexbox. The items belong in a sequence that can continue onto another line. Start with their natural reading order in the HTML. Reordering them visually to fit a particular screenshot can make keyboard movement feel disconnected from the arrangement.
Enable wrapping deliberately
A flex container does not wrap by default. Add flex-wrap:wrap when items should move to a new line instead of being squeezed or overflowing. Combine it with a gap for consistent spacing. In a filter bar, this lets longer labels stay intact while the group takes the vertical space it actually needs.
Decide which items may grow
A search field can flex to use remaining space, while a compact category button may keep its natural size. For example, give a search wrapper flex:1 1 14rem and keep its input at width:100%. This communicates both a preferred size and the permission to shrink or move when the toolbar becomes narrow.
Treat each line as independent
Wrapped Flexbox lines distribute space separately. A row containing four tags does not guarantee the same column alignment as the next row containing two. That is often ideal for chips and action groups. If precise alignment across both rows and columns is the requirement, Grid may be the better layout model.
Protect labels and focus indicators
Avoid fixing a button’s height so tightly that a translated or zoomed label is clipped. Allow a reasonable minimum size and line height. Make sure row gaps leave room for focus outlines around adjacent controls. A tightly packed toolbar can technically wrap and still feel difficult to operate because its interactive boundaries are unclear.
Try realistic variations
Test the longest filter name, a search field with text entered, a disabled action and a browser zoom level that makes the group wrap. At a very small width, a single-column arrangement may be clearer than elaborate space distribution. Judge success by whether each control remains understandable and reachable, not whether every row has the same number of items.
